I have a love:hate relationship with paint and much like “52 Facies” is intended to get me drawing again, I’m hoping “Daily Layers” will get me back into a painting routine. If you follow my Instagram, you’ll have seen that I completed my first painting of the year, “In His Prime”, and shared the progression through daily layers (see the progression slideshow below). I was in two minds about sharing this because often, there’s not much or only ugly progress to see; plus it raises expectations, which can be a hindrance to a self-conscious muse.
As it happens, this painting came together fairly easily. I liked him on day 7 but wanted to fix the contour of his face. He looked like an older version of himself then and on day 8, became younger and more bright-eyed but with a better face shape. That’s the issue with fiddling and deciding when to walk away: when I feel I’m close to done, it’s frustrating to lose some details I like whilst fixing others I don’t. I could have gone further with him but he’d acquired a certain character and charm, so I let him be.
